Traditional wooden gates are held together with mortise-and-tenon joints, and that joinery demands completely knot-free wood. The only place to find it is the inner core of old-growth cedar: trees that stood for five hundred years before anyone cut them for fencing.

We were tired of taking wood from those majestic survivors of the ancient forests to make garden gates. So we went looking for a better material. We wanted something that grows back in years, not centuries. Something far stronger than cedar, that would last longer in the weather.

Bamboo gave us all of that. It regrows from its own roots and is ready to harvest again in three years or more. Laminated across the grain, it is up to 2.8 times stronger than cedar and more than eight times harder.

The beauty was a bonus.
